    S. ambassador to Mexico from 1927 to 1930 who improved bilateral relations, mediating the religious conflict in Mexico known as the Cristero rebellion (1926–29), but also contributing to an easing of conflict between the two countries over oil. " A member of the Republican Party, he also served as the United States senator from New Jersey from 1930 to 1931.
